Leogane Maternal and Child Health Center
Approximately 70% of hospitals in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area are closed; all maternity wards in Port-au-Prince have been looted, burned, or closed due to gang pressure, as recently stated by the Ministry of Public Health. Leogane is the only city near Port-au-Prince that currently provides medical care to pregnant women and survivors of sexual assault.
The Maternal Child Center of Leogane, located in Leogane, was supposed to serve the population of the area. However, due to the chaotic situation the country is experiencing, where over 50% of people are fleeing from the violence of gangs in Port-au-Prince and Carrefour, the center has been significantly affected. It serves an average of 200 to 250 patients per day. Previously, the center received everything it needed to function from the central government; now, it is the patients who must bring everything necessary to receive care. Many women have lost their lives while giving birth because they do not have the means to purchase even basic supplies, such as gloves or injections.
The Lighthouse will work with Mr. Rosemé Joachim, the administrator of the center, to help provide the necessary supplies needed for the center to function, including gloves, sanitary towels, toilet paper, chlorine, detergent, oxytocin, laundry soap and medicines.
A Big Thank you to Minneapolis University Rotary Foundation for the grant to purchase medicines, medical supplies and food for the center.
